Preview of my Yuri!!! on Ice x Fruits Basket crossover fic

Because you just know that a meeting between Viktor Nikiforov and Ayame Sohma (i.e. The Battle Of Who Is More Extra) would be all kinds of epic, I had to share a preview of the Yuri!!! on Ice x Fruits Basket crossover fic idea that has recently grabbed ahold of my every waking thought. The basic premise is one where a scheming Okukawa Minako contacts Ayame and Mine about potentially designing figure skating costumes for an ice show that Viktor and Yuuri will be hosting the following year. As of now, it'll be told first from Yuri Plisetsky's POV, and then from Yuki Sohma's POV (who would honestly be kindred spirits when it comes to their chagrin with most everything happening in this story lol).

I can see this story going in many different directions but a few things I already know will happen:

1) Viktor immediately gets jealous when he sees how Yuuri looks at Ayame with stars in his eyes ("Yuuuurrriiiiii, is it because his hair is thicker than mine?! That could be a wig for all we know!")

2) Ayame is absolutely delighted at the idea of developing costumes centered around Viktor/Yuuri's love story, and proceeds to suggest all kinds of outlandish ideas for these designs (i.e. which Yuki will summarily shoot down, since he is interning at Ayame's shop for the summer while home from college)

3) Yuuri and Mine will bond in their shared exasperation/fondness for their extremely exuberant husbands, while Yurio and Yuki will similarly share lament to one another about the antics of their elder brothers (and yes, while Yurio and Viktor aren't biologically related, I think it's pretty safe to say in a post-canon world that Yuuri/Viktor assume the role of his "embarrassing" older brothers)

More than anything, I think the hardest part will be how to keep this thing streamlined, since I'm finding the ideas flowing rather easily with this concept, LOL.

Oh, and my working title is "Like the pot calling the kettle Ayame" which is probably self-explanatory if folks are familiar with the similarities in Viktor and Ayame's personalities...

Hello, hello, just want to say I love your Frubas posts about Kyo & Yuki's relationship and Tohru & Akito & Shigure's relationship. It's great and a few of my favorite metas ever.....(Yes, I'm also a multishipper).

About Fruba, what do you think about Hanajima and Uotani's relationship? Actually I really hate endgame between Arisa and Kureno. As someone who just followes Fruits Basket since anime reboot 2019, I thought that at least Uotani and Hanajima got open ending (ambiguous) relationship but this end, really?

Because you are the original fan since 2000s, are you surprised with Arisa/Kureno ending? Also, is it weird if I ship Ayame with Hatori (can you see the it)?

Please keep in my mind these are all just my personal opinions and being someone who read the manga and watched both the original and remake anime adaptations, it doesn't make me anymore an expert on the topic of Fruits Basket. I'm just a multishipper who yaps like I get paid for it (I'm glad you like my metas on it tho!)

But for me personally across all three versions of the series, I've never seen the relationship between Tohru, Arisa and Saki as anything but sisterly. If you ever see me talk about them and their relationship, it's going to be talking about how great their friendship and sisterhood is. How they lift each other up when they're down and worry about each other as if they're all blood.

I wasn't surprised at all when Arisa and Kureno's relationship came around the corner and I'm admittedly a huge Kurisa shipper. I like their chemistry, you can see how much they are into one another from day 1 and their desire to be with each but Kureno putting his happiness on hold because of the obligations he feels to stay by Akito was so good that the relationship payoff by the end of the series feels satisfying.

For me.

So I've personally never read any interaction between Arisa and Saki as romantic or ambiguous enough to be seen as romantic. BUT, huge however comma, just because I don't see doesn't mean others don't see it and I'm not gonna shoot someone down for shipping what they like or interpreting a relationship how they see fit.

You ship what you ship and if that's AriSaki, enjoy AriSaki.

And one multishipper to another, I don't think you're weird if you ship Hatori with Ayame. Ayame is very much pan and has an established sense of admiration towards Hatori and as much as Hatori gripes about Shigure and Ayame's shenanigans, he clearly cares about them as they've been stuck together for so long.

So I see your vision.

A Showdown of 'Extraness': my Yuri!!! on Ice x Fruits Basket Crossover

Cutting it close, but I made it in the nick of time for Fruits Basket Mondays!

My attempt to envision what might happen if my favorite anime characters were to meet practically wrote itself, but I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised, given that they are the two most extra people in the world: costume designer Ayame Sohma from Fruits Basket (Furuba) and figure skater/coach Viktor Nikiforov from Yuri!!! on Ice. You can now read the story here, which features, among other things:

-An instantly star-struck Yuuri who is dazzled by Ayame's appearance

-Pouty/jealous Viktor who wants to make sure his husband's eyes stay on him (and is even tempted to go against his doctors' advice not to jump quads in this endeavor)

-Yuki Sohma and Yuri Plisetsky, whose blood pressure readings might otherwise indicate they're dead, such is their exasperation with Viktor and Ayame's combined auras

-Mine and Ayame being moved to tears by Yuuri's explanation of his Yuuri on Ice routine

-Haru casually admitting to Yuri that Yuki is his first love

-and protective Yuki, defending his brother's extraness due to a misunderstanding

Ayame, Viktor, Yuuri, Mine, Yuki, and Yuri's meeting is made possible thanks to the meddling of Okukawa Minako, who has been a loyal client of Ayame and Mine's costume design business for many years, and suggests that the Katsuki-Nikiforovs utilize their expertise for an upcoming ice show.

Below is an excerpt that I hope piques your interest!

“Indeed, the very opposite of a battle will be happening today!” Ayame cried out, his eyes beginning to glint with a sort of crazed fervor.

Axel, Lutz, and Loop just stared, for once rendered entirely speechless.

It was hard to tell if it was Ayame’s words or his general aura that had had such an impact on the triplets.

“Yuuri-kun! It’s Vik-chan’s equally extra twin!” Yuuko burst out, turning wide, enraptured eyes onto her childhood best friend.

The range of reactions this elicited truly ran the gamut.

Most pronounced was Viktor’s betrayed hiss of “What do you mean, ‘equally’?! You once called me the most extra person alive!”.

Then there was Ayame and Loop’s delighted clapping, as well as Mine and Axel’s expressions of earnest fascination.

But it was Yuki’s petrified reaction that immediately solidified Yuri’s sense of kinship with the young man, who was silently mouthing “equally?” over and over, with a visage of pure terror.

He knew the feeling all too well.

With Yuuri and Viktor having left Russia in the spring of 2019, he didn’t see them nearly as often as he used to when they’d trained alongside one another in St. Petersburg. As such, any period of prolonged exposure to the extremely over-the-top ‘Skate Spouses’ had to be handled with unwavering resolve.

He’d long accepted it as his cross to bear, and realized that he and Yuki were likely the only ones with a chance of preventing this business meeting from turning into a multi-hour ordeal. Long-winded monologues about the wonders of artistic collaboration and potential duels for Yuuri’s attention were likely the least of their worries.

“I think I’m beginning to understand why Minako was so eager for this meeting to occur,” Yuri cut in, dryly. “Let’s get to the ice. We only have a half-hour before public skate opens.”

With this, he indicated for the triplets to get a move-on, and started to push Yuuri and Viktor forwards (which interrupted the former’s intent examination of the exact dimensions of Ayame’s ridiculously long handkerchief).

As they began to move in an awkward shuffle, Viktor turned to his spouse, whispering urgently.

“Yuranya, I was just thinking: how about I switch up the choreography a bit for my part in ‘Yuuri on Ice’? Even just one quad wouldn’t do any harm, don’t you think? That ending triple flip could be swapped out–”

“ABSOLUTELY NOT!” Yuri bellowed, that blood pressure spike finally taking effect.

Poor Yuuko tripped over Ayame’s handkerchief in alarm, but at this point, the “train” of his rage had already left the station, barrelling right through the departure doors.

“Do I need to remind you of what your doctors said last week, YOU IDIOT?!?” he continued in a roar, hardly daring to believe Viktor’s foolishness. “You must be out of YOUR GODDAMN MIND– ” (“Yura! Language!”) “ –if you think I plan on spending the rest of the day in the emergency room, ALL BECAUSE YOU LET YOUR INSECURITY OVER SOME ATTRACTIVE STRANGER (“So you admit it! You do think he’s attractive!”) “ –land you FLAT ON YOUR ASS in the middle of the rink WITH A BUSTED KNEE!”
